SkyBow (LAHAT) (Israel), Air-to-surface missiles - Direct attack
Type
Laser-guided battlefield missile.

Development
Israel Aerospace Industries' MBT subsidiary has developed a gun-fired, laser-guided anti-tank weapon known as the LAHAT. At the 2004 Asian Aerospace exhibition, held in Singapore during February, IAI revealed a new air-launched derivative of the LAHAT, also referred to as the SkyBow. IAI says that work on the LAHAT programme began in the mid-1990s and that airborne testing has been conducted to integrate the missile on attack and transport helicopters. By 2005 IAI had conducted airborne launches of the missile from Mi-8/Mi-17 and MD-500/MD-530 helicopters. The missile system has been demonstrated to India and Chile. During the 2005 Paris Air Show HAL displayed one of its Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters fitted with a four-round LAHAT launcher.

The SPIKE-ER can be installed in the AH-1S Cobra, Agusta A-129, MD-500 Defenders, Gazelle, Mi-24 Hind and many more.

The Spike family includes: Spike-SR with a range of 800m, Spike-MR (Gill) with range of 2,500m, Spike-LR with 4,000m range and Spike-ER (formerly known as NTD Dandy) with a range of 8,000m. Spike-LR and Spike-ER can also be fitted on light combat vehicles and a package for mounting Spike-ER on helicopters is also available.
Army-technology.com
Y sobre el LAHAT
The LAHAT missile has a range of 8 km when launched from a ground platform, and up to 13 km, when deployed from high elevation.

“ the SPIKE-ER can be installed in the AH-1S Cobra, Agusta A-129, MD-500 Defenders, Gazelle, Mi-24 Hind AND MANY MORE.”

“ The launcher is connected to the fixed helicopter pylon via 14" standard lugs on each side of the helicopter and requires NO HELICOPTER MODOFICATIONS ”

http://www.rafael.co.il/Marketing/333-894-en/Marketing.aspx

JoseCueva

veamos.

“ February 2, 2010 Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has conducted a successful firing trial of two Laser Homing Attack (LAHAT) laser-guided missiles from an Israel Air Force (IAF) COBRA helicopter. The missiles were fired from the helicopter at ranges of 3.5 km and 7 km, resulting in direct impact on the targets.
The LAHAT lightweight precision guided weapon utilizes a semi-active laser homing guidance method, and can be fired from the barrel of a tank gun, from light vehicles and from light helicopters, hitting targets with pinpoint accuracy at ranges of up to 8 km. It is effective against armored targets and in the war against terrorism.
Defence Professionals”

Defence Professionals.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\Escritorio\helo con spike\defence_professionals defpro_com LAHAT.mht

“ The LAHAT missile HAS A RANGE OF 8 km when launched from a ground platform, AND UP TO 13 km, WHEN deployed from high ELEVATION.
Defense Update”
http://defense-update.com/directory/lahat.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAHAT

“ The LAHAT missile HAS A RANGE OF 8 km when launched from a ground platform, AND UP TO 13 km, WHEN deployed from high ELEVATION.
Defense Update

JoseCueva

“ Israel Spikes

Israel's skill as a developer and producer of combat-proven systems is undiminished. Work there is dominated by Rafael and its Spike missile family, but Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) remains a credible supplier with its Nimrod weapons. Rafael's Spike stands apart from its many rivals through its use of a fibre-optic guidance system, which allows total man-in-the-loop control at every stage of the engagement.

In fact, the 'Spike' name is applied to several different designs. The smallest missile, Spike-Short Range (SR), is a fire-and-forget shoulder launched missile with an uncooled IIR seeker that is effective out to 600 m. The Spike-Medium Range (MR) is a larger man-portable weapon, fired from a container launch unit (CLU), to a range of about 2,500 m. The Spike-LR variant extended this range to 4,000 m. This was followed by the Spike-ER, developed for vehicles and helicopters, with an effective range of up to 10 km.

Battlefield missiles: Fingertip firepower

The world's array of lightweight battlefield missiles ranges from shoulder-fired weapons to heavy helicopter armament. Robert Hewson gives a worldwide update

Since the end of the Second World War, development of small battlefield missiles has been driven by the anti-armour mission. As a result, the world's armed forces entered this decade with an inventory of many hundreds of thousands of sophisticated weapons, optimised for efficient tank killing. The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have seen these missiles take on the role of irregular warfare in urban terrain. Some weapons have adapted well, but every user and manufacturer has been forced to reassess their current needs and future requirements.

The past credos of weapons design are being questioned. For example, are fire-and-forget weapons now less useful than the 'old-fashioned' systems that kept a man in the loop? Current rules of engagement - putting a premium on lowering the collateral damage risk - would seem to say yes, making some exotic technologies less practical on today's battlefield. Another issue for some anti-tank missiles is their top-attack flight profile, which can prevent a weapon from hitting targets under cover.

Not every customer has the same concerns. While strategy and doctrine in the US and with its allies is being reshaped (some say too much so) by the new forms of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, countries such as India and Pakistan are planning to face massed armoured assault across a broad front. The rules of the battlefield missiles game are changing, but not for everyone.

The spread of missile sales and technology means nations with even modest financial or industrial resources now operate affordable weapons that can change the nature of regional conflicts. Georgia's access to Israeli Spike missiles undermined Russia's armoured superiority during the 2008 South Ossetia conflict.

Weapons have filtered down even to a non-state level. In 2006, Hizbullah's surprise use of Russian missiles against Israeli armour in Lebanon changed the strategic balance between one of the world's most effective armies and an insurgent force.

The United States dominates the international battlefield missiles market with competition from Israel and Russia, and somewhat less so from Europe. The US is now modifying existing systems such as Hellfire, Javelin, Maverick and Tube-launched Optically Tracked Wire-guided (TOW) missiles to be better suited to irregular warfare and urban close air support (CAS). It is also pressing ahead with ambitious but delayed plans for a new generation of weapons such as the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) and the Non-Line-of-Sight Launch System (NLOS-LS).

A Raytheon/Boeing team is competing with Lockheed Martin to build the JAGM, which will replace almost all of the current US crop of helicopter and fast-jet air-to-surface missiles. The JAGM programme had a staccato start, following on from the Joint Common Missile (JCM), which was contracted to Lockheed Martin in 2004 and then cancelled in 2006-07. The JAGM has all the same requirements as the JCM and will be a missile with a tri-mode seeker, multipurpose warhead and maximum range of 16 km from a helicopter and 28 km from a fast jet.

The two teams are engaged in a 27-month technology development programme and face a preliminary design review in June. Both competitors will deliver six missiles to the US Department of Defense (DoD) for firing trials (three missiles each) in July or August. The request for proposals (RfP) for the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the programme is expected in July or August with a 60-day response time, and selection of the single supplier is expected by the end of the year. The US Army, Navy and Marine Corps have a stated requirement for 33,000 JAGMs and international sales are guaranteed. The missile is due to enter service on the AH-64D, AH-1Z and F/A-18E/F in late 2016 and on the MH-60R and Extended Range/Multi-Purpose (ER/MP) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in 2017.

First fired in combat in 2003, the Raytheon/Lockheed Martin FGM-148 Javelin has become the key short-range weapon for US land forces. The missile now has 11 export customers, from Ireland to Taiwan, with a ground-breaking order from France pending. Although the Javelin's roots are firmly in the expected tank battles of the 1980s - and its first targets in 2003 were Iraqi tanks - its use today by US and UK forces is exclusively for irregular warfare. Raytheon notes that UK forces have been firing between 60 and 70 missiles a month in Afghanistan, while US forces have been shooting about 25 per month.

The Javelin is a fire-and-forget weapon with an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker that locks onto its target using the man-portable Command Launch Unit (CLU). According to Raytheon, although the missile is not controlled after launch, there is a precise man-managed process to its targeting. Roy Adams, Raytheon's Javelin business development manager, said: "When a Javelin is launched, it goes exactly to the designated impact point and the guy pulling the trigger is the same guy looking at that precise point."

Raytheon has delivered more than 32,000 Javelins and about 3,300 have been fired in combat. Production is running at between 1,300 and 2,000 per year. A new multipurpose warhead is in development to add an improved blast/fragmentation effect. It will be fielded by the US in Fiscal Year 2013-14.

Upgrades and developments

A Block 1 upgrade for the original Block 0 CLU entered production in 2007. By improving the thermal sight and replacing the cathode ray tube (CRT) with a flat-panel display, the missile's lethal range (target lock on) increased from 1,800 m to 2,500 m. Raytheon is developing a precision terminal guidance (PTG) enhancement, adding a datalink that will allow the operator to adjust the Javelin's aimpoint after launch.

Flight-testing of the PTG missile is expected later this year. Beyond that Raytheon says the Javelin system can be fully networked once the US Army decides on a networking standard.

Older US weapons have stayed relevant by evolving, as evidenced by the continuing success of Lockheed Martin's Hellfire and Raytheon's TOW. In October 2009 the US Army unveiled the latest version of the AGM-114 Hellfire.

The AGM-114R 'Romeo' has a multipurpose warhead to defeat the range of targets currently covered by four different Hellfire types. The Romeo is also fitted with an inertial navigation system that allows off-axis launches of up to 180 degrees. This capability is tailored for UAV applications, which played a large part in driving the AGM-114R's development. Within the next three years, the AGM-114R will become the sole production variant of the missile.

The first of nine airborne launch trials with the ER/MP UAV began in November last year and all were completed by February 2010. Hellfire production was supposed to end in 2005, to be replaced by the cancelled JCM. Instead, Lockheed Martin maintains a yearly production rate of about 6,000 missiles and will be funded to continue production well into the next decade. The Hellfire has 20 users worldwide, but has been largely restricted to carriage on US platforms. However, Australia and France have decided to arm their Eurocopter Tiger helicopters with Hellfires.

Raytheon's BGM-71 TOW is the 'grandaddy' of US lightweight guided weapons. Developed in the mid-1960s, the TOW has been replaced by more modern weapons several times over, but the missile continues to thrive on the back of its worldwide user base and huge inventories. TOW's original wire-guidance system, which made it relatively slow and cumbersome, is criticised in some quarters. Yet this guidance technique retains an invaluable man-in-the-loop and allows the missile to be controlled in ways that other weapons cannot match. For example, US Marine Corps AH-1W pilots spoke with enthusiasm of how during the invasion of 2003 their TOW missiles could be flown under bridges to hit Iraqi armoured vehicles that were otherwise immune from attack. TOW use continued with US forces during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Since the introduction of a new radio frequency (RF) command link, the TOW guidance system is completely wireless. Raytheon notes that three versions of the RF-guided weapon are in production - TOW 2A, TOW 2B Aero and the TOW BB - with more than three years of order backlog sustaining a production rate of about 9,000 missiles a year. The current US Army weapons roadmap keeps the TOW in service until at least 2035. Future enhancements to the missile will increase the range, improve insensitive munition (IM) compliance and warhead performance and give the opportunity to engage targets beyond line of sight.

Engagement at beyond visual ranges was the tast allocated to the next-generation Non-Line-Of-Sight Precision Attack Missile (NLOS PAM) programme, drawn up as part of the US Army's Future Combat System (FCS) initiative. The NLOS PAM 'missiles in a box' system is being developed by the Netfires joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

The PAM is designed to navigate using GPS over distances of up to 40 km before using a dual-mode semi-automatic laser (SAL)/IIR seeker for terminal homing against fixed or moving targets. Testing of the NLOS PAM continues despite the collapse of the wider FCS plan in 2009. During testing in January and February, four missiles out of six launches failed to hit their targets. Limited production of the NLOS PAM was supposed to begin in 2011, but this plan is now under review.

European outlook

Europe's grasp on the battlefield missile sector has slipped. MBDA could once lay claim to 75 per cent of the anti-tank market worldwide, and while it has a well-installed customer base for weapons like Milan and Eryx, the company has not yet brought forward the next-generation designs needed to replace these missiles. Several co-operative European technology development efforts, such as the European Modular Missile and Multi-Role Combat Missile, have failed to bear much fruit. Last year the French government declined to support the Milan ER programme, while a new infantry/battlefield weapon is not part of the UK's Complex Weapons initiative.

However, MBDA says the Milan and Eryx remain firmly in production and in demand because they are simple, effective and affordable. An Enhanced Eryx with an improved thermal imager has been developed and was demonstrated to a potential Gulf state customer last October. This 'silent Eryx' has a new uncooled IR sensor that is completely quiet in operation. MBDA also introduced the New Eryx Training Simulator (NETS) to help counter the perception that semi-automatic command-to-line-of-sight (SACLOS) weapons like Eryx need to be fired more often to train operators.

MBDA has orders for more than 57,000 missiles from eight customers, with more than 30,000 delivered to date. The French Army ordered additional weapons last year and has used the Eryx in combat in Afghanistan. Although the warhead was optimised for armoured targets, operational experience has shown that Eryx is effective against infrastructure targets over its 600 m range. MBDA is confident it will win further orders from new customers in 2010.

The Milan missile is also a mass production item for MBDA, with Milan 3 deliveries scheduled for Libya and South Africa. More than 350,000 missiles in four variants were delivered to 43 countries. High rate production of the Milan 2T continues by Bharat Dynamics Ltd in India, where more than 30,000 Milans have already been assembled for the Indian Army.

The loss of the French national customer for the latest Milan Extended Response (ER) was certainly a blow to the programme, but development continues. The ER weapon introduces a tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead, a two-stage motor, better flight characteristics and a 3,000 m range, extended from 2,000 m. The missile is designed to be used with the Advanced Technology (ADT) firing post.

The Milan ER has completed trials and is ready for production, according to MBDA. Lead time, from order to delivery, will be about two years. The company said it expects to have firm export orders before the end of 2011. MBDA added that several customers want the Milan specifically because of its SACLOS guidance system and the direct control that gives to the operator.

French sources note that Milans are being fired "daily" by French forces in Afghanistan, and UK troops also made heavy use of their missiles until Milan was withdrawn in 2008-09. It is worth noting that both countries opted for the Javelin as a Milan successor - although the French buy, which is yet to be confirmed, is for an interim batch of 250 missiles with 76 firing posts. French Milan stocks will be retained until at least 2015.

France is looking for a next-generation battlefield weapon in the post-2015 timeframe. MBDA says it would prefer to develop an all-new weapon to meet the French requirement and take to the export market.

However, the company confirms it is also in talks with Rafael and Raytheon/Lockheed Martin about potential co-operative developments of the Spike-Extended Range (ER) missile and the extended-range Javelin PTG upgrade. Customer demand for a low-risk, near-term weapon plus the lack of development money in the current French budget plan, which covers 2009 to 2015, is strongly influencing these joint programme discussions.

Germany opted for its own unique solution when it signed up to buy the PARS 3 Long Range (LR) anti-tank missiles from MBDA Germany in 2006. The PARS 3 LR is the last surviving element of the 1980s-vintage tri-national TRIGAT missile programme. Germany's air-launched PARS 3 LR 'fire-and-forget' weapon uses a passive-homing design with an imaging infrared seeker for guidance. Once in service, the PARS 3 LR will arm German Army Eurocopter Tiger UHT combat helicopters. Production of the first missiles started earlier this year with deliveries due in 2011. MBDA is now bidding the PARS 3 LR to meet an Indian Army requirement for a fire-and-forget weapon capable of salvo launches against armoured targets. MBDA has teamed with Kamov to offer the missile on the Ka-52 helicopter and is also looking to integrate it with HAL's Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter.

Another new weapon from an old programme is the UK's Dual Mode Brimstone (DMB). The original Brimstone was developed by MBDA as a fully-autonomous anti-armour missile for use against massed armoured formations. Long delays in its development meant that by the time Brimstone was declared operational in 2005, the Soviet-era threat it was intended to counter was gone. In 2007, work started at MBDA to meet an urgent UK operational requirement for a precision close air support weapon. The result was the DMB, with a modified seeker that now includes a SAL homing function alongside the original millimetre-wave radar. The missile entered service in 2008 as a Tornado GR.Mk 4 weapon and was first used operationally in Iraq during 2009.

Elsewhere in Europe, Sweden retains independent missile-making expertise at Saab Bofors Dynamics. Its offering in the lightweight guided weapons field is the Next-generation Light Anti-tank Weapon (NLAW) now in service with three customers. The NLAW was developed to meet a British Army requirement and, as a result, it is being built in Belfast by Saab's programme partner Thales Air Defence. This single production line supports all deliveries to the UK, Sweden and Finland.

After some delays in development and an early production halt to resolve some manufacturing difficulties, the NLAW was declared operational by the UK in April 2009. The current orderbook stands at about 20,000 missiles.

The NLAW is another weapon optimised for tank-killing, with a downward-firing copper-lined, dynamically compensated shaped-charge warhead. However, it can be launched in a direct attack mode against other targets, even helicopters, when the proximity fuze does not detonate the warhead in shaped-charge mode. The blast and fragmentation effect has proved efficient on these occasions. Saab is now looking at improving the NLAW's probability-of-kill at distances beyond its 600 m design range. The weapon tracks its targets using a predicted-line-of-sight (PLOS) guidance and Saab expects to be able to demonstrate the required accuracy and effectiveness out to 1,000 m.

Israel Spikes

The Spike-MR, ER and LR can be fitted with a CCD/IIR seeker that allows them to be launched against any target in a fire-and-forget mode. However, the same missiles can also use a fibre-optic control link for 'fire-observe-update' engagements. This permits missiles to be fired from under cover, in a lock-on after-launch mode. It also gives the Spike an unrivalled level of accuracy. Rafael does not identify its customers, but Spike missiles have been acquired by several Asian and Latin American countries - including Singapore, Colombia, Chile and Peru - plus Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain and Turkey. License production is undertaken by joint-ventures in Singapore (SMART Systems) and Germany (EuroSpike).

A breakthrough order from Spain in 2007 lead to Spike-ER missiles being integrated on Eurocopter Tiger HAE attack helicopters there as part of a larger Spike purchase by the Spanish Army. Local production is being undertaken by General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas. Another new helicopter integration will be completed in 2011, when the Spike is cleared for use on AgustaWestland's A 129 Mangusta.

Early in 2010, Rafael announced a new Spike version, the Spike NLOS (Non-Line-Of-Sight). The NLOS missile replaces the fibre-optic cable with a two-way RF datalink that extends its effective range to 25 km, or more. The missile and launch canister weigh 71 kg and can be fitted with either an anti-armour shaped-charge or penetrating blast/fragmentation warhead. It uses the same CCD/IIR seeker as previous missiles. Although introduced by Rafael as a 'new' design, the Spike NLOS programme dates back more than 10 years. It is already established in service with the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and has been used operationally. It has been declassified and made available for export - suggesting that the IDF already has a successor system.

IAI's Nimrod Advanced Laser-Guided Missile System (N/ALGMS) was developed during the 1980s as a private venture for both ground and air-launched use, tailored to IDF operational needs for an anti-tank weapon.

At 2.6 m long and weighing 98 kg, the Nimrod is larger than most other anti-tank weapons. It has a reported maximum range of 25 km using a mid-course inertial guidance system, possibly with a command update facility, and SAL terminal guidance. The Nimrod has been integrated on vehicle launchers and large helicopters such as the CH-53. In 2007, when IAI first showed its Heron TP UAV in public, the Nimrod missile was displayed alongside it. A low collateral damage version of the missile may already be in service on Israel's armed UAVs.

Russia's battlefield missile industry remains robust although it has suffered from the lack of investment that has weakened all of Russia's military capabilities during the past 20 years. Ground-launched weapons are largely the responsibility of Tula's KBP Instrument Design Bureau. It builds the Metis-M1 system (9M131M missile, 9P151M launcher), which NATO calls AT-13 'Saxhorn' and the Kornet-E(9M133 missile, AT-14 'Spriggan'). The improved Metis-M1 is now effective against tanks at up to 2,000 m. It is a wire-guided missile with tandem-HEAT and thermobaric warhead options. The Kornet-E is a laser beam-rider effective out to 5,500 m. KBP is now developing its next-generation Hermes missile, that is intended to be a multi-mission ground, air and ship-launched weapon.

Konstruktorskoye Byuro Mashynostroyenia (KBM) is Russia's other battlefield missile provider. It supports its vintage Malyutka (AT-3 'Sagger') family, which was mass produced and widely copied. The 9M114 Shturm (AT-6 'Spiral') remains in limited service, with most users having moved to the improved 9M120 Ataka-V (AT-9 'Spiral-2'). With several planned replacement weapons failing to emerge, the 9M120 is the primary air-launched weapon for most Mi-24, Mi-35 and Mi-28 attack helicopters.

China progresses

China has been slow to develop a broad spectrum of battlefield missiles, although work is progressing at an accelerated pace. For many years the People's Liberation Army relied on the wire-guided HJ-8. Based on Russia's elderly Malyutka (AT-3) design, Norinco's HJ-8 evolved along similar lines in a variety of ground and air-launched variants. A follow-on weapon has now appeared from Norinco in the shape of the HJ-9. Described in China as a 'third generation weapon' the HJ-9 bears a startling resemblance to the BGM-71C Improved TOW or South Africa's Ingwe. The baseline HJ-9 is a SACLOS weapon with a tandem HEAT warhead and an effective range of around 5,000 m. Improved versions, one with a millimetre wave radar seeker, have also been displayed but their service status is unclear.

China is developing an air-launched missile for its WZ-10 attack helicopter, dubbed 'HJ-10'. This is a Hellfire-class anti-tank weapon, thought to be in development but to have undertaken several firing trials in conjunction with the WZ-10's target acquisition and designation system. Another new airborne missile is the lightweight AR-1, first seen in 2008 and optimised for use by UAVs. The laser-guided 45 kg AR-1 is China's first publicly revealed attempt to field a new very lightweight missile of the kind that current and future armed UAV operations demand.

In South Africa, Denel Dynamics maintains the Ingwe and Mokopa missiles in its portfolio. Ingwe is the final evolution of an earlier generation of anti-armour missiles developed, fielded and fired in combat by the South African armed forces. The Ingwe is a SACLOS weapon with a range of about 5,000 m and tandem HEAT warhead. It has been offered in several ground-launched configurations and is part of the armament fit integrated by Advanced Technologies and Engineering with its 'Super Hind' Mi-24 upgrade. Ingwes have been delivered to Super Hind customer Algeria and fired in combat there. Ingwe's successor is Denel's Mokopa - a more advanced laser-guided weapon with a 10 km range. Development of the Mokopa was tied closely to Denel's Rooivalk attack helicopter and delays with that programme have so far kept the Mokopa out of the market.

Many other nations have specific national requirements for battlefield missiles, usually as anti-armour weapons. Chief among them is India, where the long-overdue indigenous Nag programme is due to start its latest round of 'final trials' in May. India plans to deploy the IIR-guided missile as a vehicle system (Nagina) and on the Dhruv helicopter (Helina). However, development of the Nag has been running for well over 20 years and it is not entirely clear when it will completed. In Pakistan, where most of India's strategic thinking is directed, a version of the Chinese HJ-8 is produced as the Baktar Shikan.

Iran builds a number of anti-tank weapons, most derived for the US missile designs delivered to the Shah. These include the Toofan series (reverse-engineered TOWs), Saeghe (a reverse-engineered Dragon) and the Raad (a 9K11 Malyutka copy). Even Brazil has ventured into this field with Mectron's MSS-1.2 laser-guided short-range missile.

The definitions of what counts as a tactical battlefield weapon are changing, as old certainties collide with new operational needs and capabilities. Perhaps the best example of this is the use by US special forces of Tomahawk cruise missiles for direct support.

The datalink capability of the latest Raytheon Tomahawk Block IV allows it to be retargeted in flight. This, plus the sea-launched missile's 1,000 mile range, means it can hit targets that no other available weapon can reach. US forces have already exploited these capabilities, with the Tomahawk's ability to loiter on station, to conduct what is described as "flex targeting on Global War on Terror targets." It is a vivid illustration of how much capabilities have changed in just a few short years.
